Why our experience matters

Supporting people with complex health, mobility, communication and emotional needs was part of our everyday ambulance work - not an unfamiliar exception. It continues to shape how we work today: Calmly, practically and without judgement, with time to understand what will help each person feel safe and supported.

Why we choose a two-clinician approach

Most home earwax removal appointments are carried out by one clinician. We've deliberately chosen a different approach.

We work as a team of two because it allows one of us to focus completely on the treatment, while the other can focus on the person.

That might mean offering reassurance, helping with positioning, communicating with family or care staff, or simply giving someone the extra time and support they need.

For many appointments, that second pair of hands makes very little difference other than keeping it quick and smooth. For others, it can make all the difference.

Why we started The Earwax Ladies

IMG_0423_edited_edited_edited_edited.jpg

After years working together in the NHS, we wanted to create an ear care service that gave us the time and flexibility to care for people properly.

Home visits felt like a natural fit. Familiar surroundings, more time and two clinicians working together means we can adapt each appointment around the person in front of us.

Care first.
Always patient.

How a home visit works

Meeting us will go something like this...

Signposting

If earwax isn't the cause of your symptoms, we explain what we've found and advise on the most appropriate next steps.

Before and throughout your appointment, we work at a pace that feels comfortable, explaining each step and answering questions along the way.

Question time

We talk through your concerns, relevant medical history, consent and anything you would like us to explain.

We look in your ears

A video-endoscope assessment lets us see what is there and decide what treatment is most suitable.

Discuss & treat

We explain what we find and, where treatment is needed, use the most suitable method - whether that's microsuction, irrigation, manual instruments or a combination.

Findings & aftercare

Once treatment is complete, we talk you through our findings, show you images of your ears if you'd like to see them, and discuss any appropriate next steps. We always leave you with written aftercare advice.

Experience. Qualified. Trusted.

01.

Experienced.

Our service is built on more than 20 years of combined NHS experience, including frontline emergency care and primary care within a GP practice. Gemma was an HCPC-registered paramedic for over 18 years before stepping away from paramedic practice.

That experience underpins our focus on safe, careful treatment in patients' homes.

02.

Qualified.

We are trained in microsuction, irrigation, manual instrumentation and endoscopic ear examination, having completed recognised and accredited ear-care training, including NHS courses and training specifically provided for healthcare professionals.

We continue to maintain our knowledge and skills through ongoing training and professional development.

01.

Trusted.

As a two-person team, we work together at every visit. Continuity of care is important to us, so you'll always see Donna and Gemma, receiving a consistent, familiar and carefully delivered service from your first appointment onwards.

We hold enhanced DBS checks and comprehensive professional insurance.

We were previously CQC regulated while Gemma remained an HCPC-registered paramedic. Although we are no longer required to be CQC registered, we continue to work to the same standards and governance processes we established as a regulated service.

Earwax removal ISN'T always about hearing

A clearer view can be the first step.

Many people assume earwax removal is simply about improving hearing. Sometimes it does, but not always.

Removing troublesome earwax is often the first step towards a clear examination of the ear. It allows us to properly assess the ear, may relieve symptoms and helps us decide whether further assessment or treatment might be needed. It also promotes preventative healthcare rather than solely reactive.

Troublesome earwax can contribute to symptoms, interfere with hearing aids, prevent us from examining the ear properly, or make it difficult to determine what's causing a problem. Some people benefit from earwax removal regularly, others only occasionally, and some rarely or never need it. Our role is to assess your ears, remove earwax where appropriate, and provide honest advice if earwax isn't the cause of your symptoms.
