Hello. We're Donna & Gemma

We met working in frontline NHS healthcare. Years later, we put that experience into creating a different kind of earwax removal service.

How we got here

From frontline healthcare to The Earwax Ladies.

We met while working for an NHS ambulance service - Gemma as a paramedic and Donna as an emergency medical technician - before Gemma later moved into primary care in a GP practice.

Between us, we had more than 20 years of NHS experience before starting The Earwax Ladies, and had spent years caring for people in all sorts of situations, often in their own homes.

We’d also seen how difficult it had become for people to access earwax removal, with many GP practices no longer providing it. So we decided to do something about it.

The Earwax Ladies was our way of bringing together the two things we knew best - practical healthcare and looking after people.

More than a clinical background

Years in frontline healthcare taught us a lot that you don't learn on an ear-care course.

We spent years walking into unfamiliar situations, meeting people from every background and working out how best to help the person in front of us.

We learned to stay calm, explain things clearly, adapt when things didn't go quite to plan and, perhaps most importantly, never assume that the same approach will work for everyone.

Those are the things we brought with us when we became The Earwax Ladies - and they're still a huge part of how we work today.

EXPERIENCE THAT GOES BEYOND THE JOB

Through our ambulance careers, we gained a huge amount of experience caring for people who had complex needs and needed a little more support.

Dementia has also touched our families personally, which led us to undertake additional training, including becoming Dementia Friends and completing the Virtual Dementia Tour.

That combination of professional and personal experience has taught us a lot about patience, communication and adapting what we do - but really, it comes back to something quite simple: treating the person in front of us as an individual.

QUALIFICATIONS

Training

We’ve undertaken specialist training in otoscopy, microsuction, irrigation, manual instrumentation and endoscopic ear examination, including NHS ear-care training... And because learning shouldn't stop when the course does, we continue to undertake regular CPD.

Healthcare experience

More than 20 years of combined NHS experience across frontline emergency care and primary care - experience that still shapes the way we assess, communicate and care for people today.
